Giacometti examines twentieth-century literature both as it spans the avant-garde movements (the journal Documents, surrealism) and through its return to the external model. Intersecting with research in phenomenology, his work opens up a radical questioning of the relationship between language and reality.

L'oeuvre d'Alberto Giacometti croise les avant-gardes litteraires des l'annee 1929, ou il dialogue avec la revue Documents de Bataille et Leiris, avant de rejoindre le groupe surrealiste. Exclu par Breton en 1935 pour avoir recommence a travailler d'apres modele, Giacometti n'abandonne pourtant pas le pole subjectif, refusant dans sa representation de l'objet d'etre plus precis que la perception. Son oeuvre, qui rencontre les recherches de la phenomenologie (Sartre, Merleau-Ponty), suscite alors l'attention de nombreux ecrivains (Char, Ponge, Tardieu, Genet, Bonnefoy, Dupin, du Bouchet...), aussi desireux d'affronter le reel que conscients des limites du langage.
