| This guidebook has been designed to introduce the public to a great museum of international acclaim, famous for its rich, authentic and rare collections. The first visit to a cultural institution of such stature is associated with a range of different expectations that involve among others: the understanding of the history, art and culture of ancient societies, the pleasure of learning, the joy of discovering rare works, aesthetic enjoyment, quality entertainment and alternative utilization of leisure time comfortably and placidly within just a few hours. This brief guidebook aims to improve the museum experience and highlight the multiple possibilities of a quality visit; to reduce the embarrassment of the unknown, the confusion caused by incomprehensible information, and the physical exhaustion resulting from the visit’s long hours. It intends to provide readers with basic information about the museum space and the arrangement of its collections and, furthermore, to act as Ariadne’s thread offering a memorable tour around the collections of a museum that is unique in its kind, and contains ancient works coming from mainland and insular Greece, Cyprus, Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Sicily and Southern Italy (Magna Graecia). |
