The German-Austrian archaeologist Wilhelm Wilberg (1872-1956) was born in Athens, the son of the publisher Karl Wilberg. After his practical training as an architect (draftsman), Wilhelm Wilberg worked as an assistant in Troy and at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens. This monograph illustrates that during this phase of the late 19th century, classical antiquity became aware that architectural research of antiquity was based less on intellectual history than on the precise surveying and recording of excavated architecture. Wilberg’s architectural records are in this sense the basis of an exact reconstruction of the past of ancient monuments.
Der deutsch-osterreichische Archaologe Wilhelm Wilberg (1872-1956) wurde in Athen als Sohn des Verlegers Karl Wilberg geboren. Nach seiner praktischen Ausbildung zum Architekten (Bauzeichner) war Wilhelm Wilberg als Assistent in Troja und am Deutschen Archaologischen Institut in Athen tatig. Die vorliegende Monographie verdeutlicht, dass sich in dieser Phase des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert die klassische Altertumswissenschaft bewusst wurde, dass die Bauforschung der Antike weniger auf der Geistesgeschichte als auf dem exakten Vermessen und Aufzeichnen der ausgegrabenen Architektur beruht. Wilbergs Bauaufnahmen sind in diesem Sinn Grundlage einer exakten Rekonstruktion der Vergangenheit antiker Baudenkmaler.
