This volume contains the first editions of 52 Arabic letters from the Heidelberg Papyrus Collection, originating predominantly from the pre-Mamluk and Mamluk period. It includes correspondence relating to private affairs (No. 1-15), letters concerning business and financial matters (No. 16-27), petitions to public authorities (No. 28-29), official correspondence (No. 30-37), edicts (No. 38-41) and letters from the Jewish sphere (No. 42-52 ). The letters from the Jewish sphere are written in Arabic with Arabic script, in Arabic with Hebraic script, and in a mixture of Arabic and Hebraic language and script. Each text is examined in the following order: formal description, summary, edited text, translation, commentary. The commentary emphasizes the classification of the epistolographic phraseology in relation to parallel findings from other documents. The texts are made accessible with the help of a concordance and five indices, including a detailed glossary. A reproduction of each original text is also provided. German text.
