The Mediterranean, a space of trade and conflict, was the pivot around which the Greco-Roman world revolved. But how was its unitary nature conceived? Still unknown to Homer and Hesiod, the distinction between the sea within and beyond the Pillars of Heracles was an unforeseen outcome of Greek and Phoenician colonization. Systematically described in Journeys round the Earth and in Peripli, the Mediterranean took shape in cartography from Eratosthenes to Ptolemy. Relying on ancient mappae mundi, medieval nautical charts and portolan charts, this book takes the reader through the extraordinary cognitive process that led to a broadening of the horizon of that “early” Mediterranean that was the Aegean Sea for the ancient Greeks.
