The first four decades of the 14th century marked an extraordinary period for book production and illustration in Florence, when the city emerged as one of Europe’s leading banking and manufacturing centers. This volume examines the relationships between artistic production, patronage, the economy, the city’s history and religious developments that underpinned this period. It does so through the study of the work of a painter and illuminator known as Maestro Daddesco – a name attributed to him very early on – whose work stands as the most prominent and significant testament to this era, coinciding with Giotto’s active years.
