In der Epoche der Fruhen Neuzeit war Kunstproduktion in hohem Masse konditioniert durch die zentrale und ubiquitare Kulturtechnik des Ubersetzens. Die Ubertragung von Kunst- und Architekturtraktaten aus dem Italienischen ins Franzosische und Deutsche, aus dem Franzosischen und Niederlandischen ins Englische usw. erschloss einem erweiterten Leserkreis nicht nur neue asthetische Ideale, sondern stellte durch die beigefugten Illustrationen auch konkrete Vorbilder fur innovative Gestaltungsmoglichkeiten zur Verfugung. Die Ubersetzer bildeten eine neue Fachterminologie heraus und veranderten den Ausgangstext durch ihre Interpretation bzw. Kommentierung plurivalenter Passagen. Ebenso erfolgten oft auch auf der illustrativen Ebene neue Schwerpunktsetzungen durch Uberarbeitung oder Erganzung des Vorlagenmaterials. Der vorliegende Band untersucht textgebundene, bildgebundene und intermediale Ubersetzungsprozesse anhand einer grossen Fulle europaischer Kunsttraktate aus rund 200 Jahren (ca. 1550-1750). Zudem wird die kunstlerische Transformation der in solchen Schriften kodifizierten Vorbilder und Normen sowohl innerhalb als auch ausserhalb Europas analysiert.
