Ce titre lui a ete decerne par la philologie allemande du XIXe siecle, a une epoque ou les oeuvres latines d’Eckhart etaient encore inconnues. Dans ce livre, Kurt Flasch veut ramener le lecteur au Maitre Eckart historique. Il reconstruit le contexte intellectuel dans lequel sa pensee s’est developpee, et fait apparaitre des sources inattendues : c’est la puissante tradition peripateticienne transmise dans le monde arabe (Avicenne, Maimonide et surtout Averroes) et recue chez les peres de la philosophie allemande que furent Albert le Grand et Dietrich de Freiberg qui fournissent la cle des principales positions speculatives de Maitre Eckhart. Il s’en degage une nouvelle conception du Christianisme, fondee sur les arguments naturels des philosophes et non sur le miracle ou l’inspiration surnaturelle. Les philosophes allemands ont toujours cru qu’ils descendaient des Grecs : ils decouvriront dans ce livre leur ascendance arabe.
