In the two volumes of this edition the excavation of the Mycenaean cemetery at Voudeni, Patras is presented. The first volume illustrates the excavation grave by grave, whereas the second groups the burial artefacts found in them.
Despite the fact that only 47 of the cemetery’s chamber tombs have been investigated so far, this number represents a sizeable sample towards the establishment of the chronological framework for the Mycenaean presence at the site. Since the excavation of the settlement is unfeasible at present due to ownership issues, surely, a number of questions remains unanswered. Nevertheless, Voudeni is the first example of a site with clearly established functional areas (settlement- cemetery – harbor) in Achaea.
The size of the cemetery, the careful and architecturally varied construction of the chamber tombs, the monumentality of tomb 4, one of the largest of its kind in the Peloponnese that belonged to the settlement’s ruler, the long period of use, the large number of burials, the plethora of artefacts (some of remarkable artistic value) constitute the picture of an economically robust and administratively powerful site, which due to its strategic location seems to have exerted a dominant role over a large part of Achaea.
