English summary: This book details the cultural history of the Danube from 1740 to 1875, with the main focus centered on that section of the river which flowed through a great part of the territory of the Habsburg Empire, from whom the central course of the river served as a conduit of traffic as well as of culture. In particular, this book is concerned with that part of the Danube which acquired strategic importance for Austrian politics and economy after the wars against the Ottoman Empire. This study asks in what way the Danube differentiated itself from other great rivers of Europe and how it influenced neighboring territories in their material and immaterial characteristics. The development of societies and lifestyles are investigated as well as the administrative techniques of the Habsburg Empire were united to the Danube and also in what ways the people of the Danube lived and expressed themselves with the river and through it. The central idea of the book is that the Danube has shaped the geographic, political, economic, technological and artistic development of central and southern Europe in ways that no other river can claim. German description: Dieses Buch widmet sich der Kulturgeschichte der Donau von 1740 bis 1875. Der Fokus liegt auf jenem Abschnitt des Flusses, der einen grossen Teil des Territoriums des Habsburgerreiches durchfloss und dessen zentralen Verkehrsweg und kulturelle Verbindungslinie er bildete. Es ist jener Teil der Donau, der nach den Kriegen gegen das Osmanische Reich strategische Bedeutung fur die osterreichische Politik und Wirtschaft erlangte. Die Untersuchung geht der Frage nach, inwiefern sich die Donau von anderen grossen Stromen Europas unterscheidet und die Geschichte der angrenzenden Territorien in ihren materiellen und immateriellen Auspragungen beeinflusste. Dabei wird gezeigt, wie die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft, des Lebensstils, aber auch der Verwaltungstechniken des Habsburgerreiches mit der Donau in Verbindung stehen, und auf welche Weise die Menschen an der Donau, mit der Donau und durch die Donau lebten und sich kulturell artikulierten. Hauptthese ist, dass die Donau Mittel- und Sudeuropa geografisch, politisch, wirtschaftlich, technologisch und kunstlerisch gepragt hat wie kein anderer Fluss.
