English summary: The volume of poetry by the Czech poet Vladimir Holan titled “A Rooster for Asclepius” was composed in the years 1966-1967, during which time the fame of the author reached its peak. In 1967, Holan shared the Etna-Taormina Prize with Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and within a week, nearly 10,000 volumes of his poetry that had been translated into Italian were sold, which consequently led to his nomination for a Nobel Prize. But when “A Rooster for Asclepius” finally appeared in 1970, the situation had dramatically changed. For the Czech regime after the suppression of the Prague Spring, Holan went from being a renowned author to a barely tolerated poet. It was thus not for nothing that he cited in the title of volume of poetry presented here the words of Socrates as he drank the state mandated poison. This book presents within the context of Holan’s “Collected Works” the first extensive view into the later works of the poet. German description: Der Gedichtband ‘Dem Asklepios einen Hahn’ des tschechischen Lyrikers Vladimir Holan entstand in den Jahren 1966 bis 1967 – einer Zeit, da der Ruhm des Autors seinen Zenit erreichte. 1967 durfte sich Holan den Lyrikpreis Etna Taormina mit Enzensberger teilen, binnen einer Woche wurden in Italien 10.000 Exemplare von Holan-Ubertragungen verkauft, die Nominierung fur den Nobelpreis folgte. Doch als ‘Dem Asklepios einen Hahn’ 1970 schliesslich erschien, hatte sich die Situation dramatisch gewendet. Nach der Niederschlagung des Prager Fruhlings wurde Holan fur das Regime vom gefeierten zu einem nur noch geduldeten Dichter. Nicht zufallig zitiert er im Titel des hier vorgelegten Gedichtbandes die Worte, mit denen Sokrates den staatlich verordneten Giftbecher trank. Dieser Band gibt im Rahmen von Holans ‘Gesammelten Werken’ den ersten umfassenden Einblick ins Spatwerk des Dichters.
